Round-Up of the Paris Para-Athletic Championship 2023

The Para Athletics Championships in Paris proved to be an exciting opportunity for the athletes of Namibia to showcase their skill and passion for pushing their boundaries! With their incredible performances and feats of strenght, Namibia’s finest para-athletes showed the world that they forces to be reckoned with! Check out the daily results below:

 

9th July

Yesterday, athletes of NPC Namibia received their name tags and participated in the Opening Ceremony of the World Para Athletics in Paris! Today, the first Namibian athletes will hit the tracks: Petrus Karuli for men’s 100m, and Lahja Ishitile with her guide Sem Shimanda for the women’s 400m run!

 

10th July

The NPC Namibia Paralympic Team has had a significant presence at the World Para Athletics Championships. Lahja Ishitile and her guide Sem Shimanda showcased outstanding performance in the Women’s 400m T11 category, setting a new African Record in the heats with a time of 58:46 seconds and further improving it to 58:38 seconds in the semifinals, securing their spot in the final on Tuesday, 11 July at 20:10. Despite Karuli Petrus’s effort in the 100m T37 heats with a finish time of 12:59 seconds, he did not advance to the next round, though he is expected to compete again in the 200m event on Wednesday. Ananias Shikongo PLY and his guide Even Tjiuiju, along with Chris Kinda and guide Riwaldo Goagoseb, also delivered strong performances in the Men’s 400m T11 category, both pairs qualifying for the semifinals with times of 52.82 and 52.44 seconds respectively, set to compete in the semifinals on Tuesday, 11 July.

 

11th July

At the Para Athletic World Championships in Paris, Team Namibia showcased remarkable performances. Johannes Nambala PLY advanced to the Men’s 100m T13 final with a time of 11.20 seconds, placing 8th overall, with his final scheduled for Wednesday, 12 July. In the Men’s 400m T11, Ananias Shikongo PLY and Chris Kinda, alongside their guides, competed in the semifinals but did not advance, finishing 5th and 7th respectively. They are set to compete in the 100m T11 event on Friday, 14 July. Highlighting the team’s success, Lahja Ishitile PLY and her guide Sem Shimanda won a silver medal in the Women’s 400m T11 final with a new African Record time of 57.18 seconds. Congratulations to Team Namibia!

 

12th July

At the World Para Athletics Championships in Paris, Team Namibia has been showcasing their skills and determination. Lahja Ishitile PLY and guide Sem Shimanda earned a silver medal in the T11 400m finals, setting new African Records with each run. They also competed in the T11 100m, qualifying for the semifinals but did not advance to the finals, with their next event being the 200m heats on Saturday.

Petrus Karuli faced a setback in the 200m T37 when he lost his shoe but continued running, but unfortunately he did not advance. He has another opportunity in the 400m heats. Johannes Nambala PLY set a season’s best time of 11.05 seconds in the T13 100m finals but finished 6th. He looks forward to competing in the 400m T13 heats.

Denzel Namene finished 5th in the T44 100m final, while Lahja Iipinge and guide Paulus Filippus were disqualified in the T12 400m for a false start, with hopes to compete again in the 100m.

The team faced mixed results with moments of triumph and challenges, demonstrating resilience and determination to push their limits for the upcoming events.

 

13th July

Team Namibia continues to impress at the World Para Athletics Championships in Paris, with notable performances and upcoming events. Bradley Murere achieved a Season’s Best in the Men’s Long Jump T47 final with a jump of 5.62m, placing 15th. Petrus Karuli excelled in the Men’s 400m T37 heat, finishing 2nd with a time of 56.97 seconds, securing his spot in Friday’s final. The schedule for Friday includes multiple events for Team Namibia, featuring heats in the Men’s 100m T11 and the Men’s 400m T13, as well as the Women’s 100m T12. Highlights include Ananias Shikongo PLY and guide Even Tjiuiju, Alfred Bernardo and guide Hatago Murere, Chris Kinda and guide Riwaldo Goagoseb in the 100m T11 heats, Petrus Karuli in the 400m T37 Final, Johannes Nambala in the 400m T13 Heat, and Lahja Iipinge and guide Paulus Filippus in the 100m T12 Heat.

 

14th July

Team Namibia experienced a mix of results at the World Para Athletics Championships in Paris today. In the 100m T11 heats, Ananias Shikongo PLY with guide Even Tjiuiju and Chris Kinda with guide Riwaldo Goagoseb both advanced to the semifinals, setting a season’s best of 11.36 seconds for Ananias and Even, ranking them 4th overall, while Chris and Riwaldo secured the 11th position with a time of 11.76 seconds. Unfortunately, Alfred Bernardo and guide Hatago Murere were eliminated in the heats with a 16th place finish at 12.14 seconds.

In the 400m T37 final, Karuli Petrus finished 6th with an improved time of 56.20 seconds from his heats performance. The evening session includes Johannes Nambala competing in the Men’s 400m T13 Heat 1, Lahja Iipinge and guide Paulus Filippus in the Women’s 100m T12 Heat 5, and the T11 100m semifinals for Chris Kinda and Ananias Shikongo with their guides.

 

15th July

Day 8 of the World Para Athletics Championships in Paris has been eventful for Team Namibia, featuring a series of impressive performances. Johannes Nambala PLY excelled in the 400m T13, securing a place in the finals with a season’s best time of 48.92 seconds, and later improved his performance to win a silver medal with a new season’s best of 48.14 seconds in the final. Ananias Shikongo PLY and guide Even Tjiuiju also showcased their talent in the 100m T11 semifinals, advancing to the finals with a season’s best time of 11.20 seconds. Although Chris Kinda and guide Riwaldo Goagoseb finished 9th in their semifinal, their performance was promising for future competitions.

Lahja Iipinge and guide Paulus Filippus achieved a personal best of 12.91 seconds in the 100m T12 heats, qualifying for the semifinal, where they finished 7th with a time of 13.22 seconds. Meanwhile, Lahja Ishitile PLY and guide Sem Shimanda delivered a season’s best of 25.92 seconds in the 200m T11 heats, qualifying for the semifinals.

The championships have been a showcase of resilience and skill for Team Namibia, highlighted by finals and semifinals appearances, personal and season bests, and a silver medal achievement.

 

16th July

Team Namibia has had a successful run at the World Para Athletics Championships in Paris, with standout performances leading to silver medals for Ananias Shikongo PLY with guide Even Tjiuiju and Johannes Nambala PLY. Lahja Ishitile PLY and her guide Sem Shimanda continued their strong showing by improving their season’s best in the 200m T11 event, finishing third in the semifinal and qualifying for the finals with a time of 25.78s. Lahja Iipinge and her guide Paulus Filippus also performed well, setting a personal best of 26.65s in the 200m T12 event, securing a 6th overall position in the heats and advancing to the semifinals. As the championships draw to a close, both Lahjas aim for success in their respective finals and semifinals, with Bradley Murere also competing in the Men’s 100m T47 heats.

 

17th July

The World Para Athletics Championships concluded with Team Namibia showcasing strong performances. Lahja Ishitile PLY and guide Sem Shimanda achieved a season’s best, finishing 4th in the 200m T11 finals with a time of 25.62 seconds. Lahja Iipinge and guide Paulus Filippus finished 6th in the 200m T12 semifinal with a time of 27.19 seconds, marking a valuable experience for the young athlete. Bradley Murere secured a 4th place in his 100m T47 heat and 12th overall with an 11.26 seconds finish. The team’s efforts resulted in three silver medals and numerous personal bests, demonstrating exceptional sportsmanship. Congratulations to Team Namibia for their achievements!
